Schadenfreude!
To borrow an apt word Des, I'm watching Harper squirm with a sense of schadenfreude! The schemer getting schemed, the bully getting bullied. Now that he started the ball rolling, the opposition cannot stop their coalition, lest they admit that coup d'etat was motivated by the ending of political party subsidies. Ah, what a tangled web we weave. Even if he goes against his so called "ideology" and releases the most liberal, deficit-laden, spending program of all time, I doubt the opposition will free the beast; after all Harper took the first swing.
But he has hope; Stephan Dion has not yet made a public statement. Leave it to Dion to somehow over analyse and mess this one up.

Looks like Harper is going to have his head handed to him!
I say bring back Frank McKenna as interim PM, until a convention. He needs a seat in the house though?!
Being the political junkie, I am mesmerized by the turn of events. My prediction: Harper will suspend (prorogue) parliament and then resign. It is completely in his character to cut off the nose to spite the face. He has demonstrated his hate for the opposition is greater than any neo-con ideology he may have. He doesn't have an ounce of statesmanship in him, he has no respect for parliamentary democracy, and he couldn't care less if he plunges the country (markets) into instability.
Good riddance!
However, even if a moderate like Jim Prentice takes over, I don't see which of the coalition will back out in January to give the Cons another chance.
Seeing as we're in prediction mode here, this is mine: Michelle-Jean denies the coalition their chance at governing and forces another election. The Conservatives then increase their number of seats but still short of a majority and then the Bloc supports them!
Maybe we should place some bets on Intrade and make some moola on this. Then again, I don't know if the markets or Ottawas is more volatile! Don't want to lose more money!
I'll take that bet!
But it's going to have to be a swap derivative; there's no such market for canada on Intrade. Can we create one?
